Roger C. King passed away peacefully February 17, 2023 in Tacoma, Washington
Roger attended Centralia College, then Washington State University, Phi Gamma Delta, graduating with a degree in Forest Management before joining the Peace Corps in Chile. He then served in the 1st Cavalry division of the Army 2nd Battalion, 12th U.S. Cavalry Regiment, awarded the Silver Star for exceptional bravery under fire in Vietnam. Roger then began a 30+ year career in the U.S. Forest Service Department of Agriculture in Washington, Oregon (where he met his wife, Carole), and Mogadishu, Somalia.
Roger spent his life serving others: As a volunteer in the Peace Corps in Chile, as Commander and Life Member of the VFW and the American Legion in Lincoln City, Oregon and University Place, Washington (Legion Post 138), and at all of his Forest Service Posts in Washington, Oregon and Somalia (for two years).
As a member of Lions International he was active in international schools assistance, drove the testing truck and took great joy screening youth for the Lions Sight and Hearing Foundation. Roger (& Carole) were also deeply involved in church communities at all their Forest Service stations
In Lincoln City, he spent a great deal of time as a volunteer to teach English as a Second Language to recent Spanish speaking immigrants.
Roger also served for many years as a volunteer at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, DC and made many friends there.
He also enjoyed spending time with family, friends, traveling the world and making new acquaintances.
Interment with honors, will be at Arlington National Cemetery, outside Washington, DC, at a date to be determined. Please check back as the website will be updated.
